Keeping Boredom At Bay As A Stay-At-Home Mom

Staying home with your little one is a major decision. On the one hand, it provides a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the bonds between you and your baby. It also allows you to raise her according to your, and your partner’s, values.

On the other hand, it comes with sacrifices. Perhaps you made the decision to leave your career (and income) behind. For millions of stay-at-home parents, this means giving up a large portion of their daily interaction with other adults. This is one of the reasons many moms and dads who choose to remain at home with their babies complain of intense boredom.

Below, we’ll describe how to keep the boredom at bay. Each of the following suggestions require that you proactively look for opportunities to engage your mind and body on a regular basis.

Spend More Quality Time With Your Baby

Consider the manner in which you spend a typical day at home with your little one. You change her diapers, nurse or feed her, wash her laundry, and keep the house clean. All of these activities are done with your baby in mind, but can easily begin to take the place of quality time. The list of tasks seems endless, and thus little time is left to play with your infant.

Interacting with your little one – by playing with her, singing songs, or even dancing with her – is a great way to prevent boredom from overtaking your day. It also addresses one of the core reasons you decided to stay home with her in the first place.

Start A New Hobby

Chances are, there’s a hobby in which you have always been interested, but lacked the time to pursue it. Now may be an ideal opportunity to do so. For example, have you ever wanted to learn to paint, design homemade crafts, or take an online class? Or, you can pursue photography, learn to play an instrument, or start a “mommy blog.” As long as you’re interested in the hobby you’re pursuing, you’re bound to find it engaging.

Exercise On A Daily Basis

Exercising cuts through the boredom of staying at home. At first, getting sufficiently motivated to work out may be a challenge, especially if it has been years since you have done so. Before long, however, you’ll begin to look forward to each workout session; they give you a chance to devote your energy and concentration to something (fitness) that engages you.

If you’re a member of a gym equipped with a nursery, you can leave your little one with the nursery attendants while you exercise. Otherwise, hire a babysitter or have a friend or family member watch your baby for thirty or forty minutes.

If you’re unable to visit the gym, work out at home. Doing so can still provide a surge of energy that lasts throughout the day. This, in itself, is a valuable wall against boredom.

Schedule Get-Togethers With Other New Moms

There are many new stay-at-home moms who are dealing with the same challenges you are. Take the time to meet them and make plans to spend time together. You can often meet them at churches, coffee shops, online, or through your network of friends.

Organize small groups to take a brisk walk each morning. This is an ideal activity because it provides exercise, offers an opportunity to leave your house, and can accommodate your baby (a jogging stroller helps). Or, get together with others for a morning bagel and coffee. Or, visit the park together. The goal is to spend time with others who are experiencing the same challenges while enjoying adult interaction.

Staying at home with your baby can be a deeply rewarding experience that pays dividends years down the road. But the monotony of each day can lead to boredom unless you proactively take steps to hold it at bay.
